The Revolution,
|
The Colonists, fully recognizing the risks of being viewed as traitors, declared their independence, fought, and with God’s help secured their freedom. Eight years of brutal fighting against insurmountable odds, enduring indescribable sufferings, watching all that they held dear be consumed, created this precious opportunity for self government. The newly freed colonists were victorious; and adrift. The Declaration of Independence spelled out their grievances but did little to define how to govern themselves. The common bond of fighting England was dissolving. Disputes between the states were increasing. The original Articles Of Confederation gave no clear mandate of leadership. The major European powers were closely watching the colonies, as it appeared that the newly formed united States of America would disorganize. Having no central authority or defense, they were vulnerable and could ultimately revert back to their former condition of foreign control. Something needed to be done to preserve this hard-fought victory for independence. |
The Constitutional Convention |
Leading patriots, men like Washington, Madison, Jefferson, Franklin, Hamilton and Jay earnestly discussed a solution. They came to an unpleasant realization; the Articles Of Confederation projected no defined authority; and the other world nations did not respect the newly formed nation. They needed to be amended to give them more teeth, but some states were set against such an idea. These foresightful men had to find a way to convene a national convention and delicately introduce ideas to bind the states into a national presence, on a level with the other major powers in the world; to establish trade, provide for a national presence and defense. The challenge was to hold the convention together until an understanding was reached that could create this strong federal government without undermining the authority and presence of the states, both large and small. As we all know, success was achieved. Our fledgling nation, led by Christian spirited men, set out a shining example of self-government through the creation of our Constitution, which is unrivaled even to this day. |
Constitutional Significance |
Other than the Holy Scriptures, our Constitution is arguably the most historic document in the world. Until our constitution was penned there was none other written that delineated self-government by citizens. Like the Holy Scriptures it is a guide; only there to help us use our God given abilities to create and maintain an example where the eternal truths could be upheld for all the world to see and draw hope from. Our united States Constitution is the only constitution fashioned on the premise that the citizens are the sovereigns, having ultimate control; and that a federal government be created with specific limitations; to be a vehicle for state representation and national identity. |
A National Day of Remembrance |
If this document is so unique, so important, so vital to our very way of life, then why don’t we set aside a day every year to honor it, learn about it and celebrate its unique virtues? We believe it's time. A glance at our nation should confirm this. It’s time for caring, patriotic Americans to formalize a national holiday around this document; to set aside a day each year to honor, reflect and learn about the one document which guarantees citizens’ control of their destiny. You are invited to join us in signing this citizen petition, to be delivered to the Congress, instructing them to establish a permanent day of honor and reflection, called Constitution Day. On this day we would honor our Constitution and promote activities focused on awareness, education and understanding of it and its impact on our daily lives. Please join your fellow citizens from across this great nation to establish Constitution Day. Give the Constitution its proper recognition. |

By my signature I acknowledge:
that I am a citizen of the county and state indicated, and of the united States of America; and that I support the establishment of September 17th as Constitution Day, a National day of recognition. The Constitution of the united States is the oldest and only one worldwide which puts the citizens in complete control of government. Our Constitution is the primary foundational document with the sole purpose of limiting the legitimate powers of government. The Constitution deserves a specific day of recognition. The precepts outlined in the Constitution are essential to the unique republic formed by the founders. The lack of special emphasis such as a specific day of recognition has caused successive generations to know less and less about this foundational document. As my elected representative, I direct you to carry this message from your constituents to the Congress to support the creation of this National day of recognition, Constitution Day. |
